What to do if you are in an accident

  • Ensure everyone's safety at the scene of the accident
  • Dial 911
    • Call for an ambulance if anyone is seriously injured
    • Call police even if the accident seems minor, an official report can be helpful later
  • Note - try not to move vehicles until the police arrive, unless the vehicles impede traffic.
If you have to move vehicles try to write down position of your vehicles as well as other vehicles, road and traffic conditions, and point of impact.
  • If your vehicle is not drivable contact a towing company. Make sure your vehicle is towed by an approved towing operator and obtain the charges in writing.
  • Obtain details from any witnesses. Ask questions. Get names.
    • Write down (do not trust your memory):
    • Car's tag numbers
    • Driver's names, driver's license information, addresses, phone numbers
    • Get year, make, model, insurance information (carrier and policy number) for involved vehicles
  • If possible, photograph damage, skid marks, and take other relevant photos
    • Tip- It is a good idea to carry a disposable camera with flash in your car at all times.
  • Report the collision to your insurance agent as soon as possible.
